International WSN-DPCM research project

The project was launched in Madrid, Spain on the 13th and 14th of October at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSII-UPM).

The expected main outcome of this three-year project is a platform including an integrated toolset that will allow developers to design, implement and deploy applications for smart homes and for private and public area monitoring. Two demonstrator scenarios with high cross-domain applicability to address societal needs will be built to evaluate the impact of the platform:

•    Outdoor Parking Demonstrator in Madrid: A WSN will detect free parking slots, guiding drivers to them.
•    Environmental Quality Demonstrator in Torino: A WSN will measure the air quality as well as noise, light and electromagnetic levels on city streets.

WSN-DPCM is a cooperation project of several technical universities and companies from Spain, Italy, Lithuania and Greece. The project is funded by the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking (the European technology platform representing the field of advanced research and technology for embedded intelligence and systems), national authorities and European partner companies.

The project is coordinated by Métodos y Tecnología de Sistemas y Procesos S.L, a Spanish company. The total volume of the project is EUR 3.3 million.

LIVING++ is a European project under the 8th EraSME Call that addresses the needs and demands when elderly people are overwhelmed with the usage of current technical devices. To counter this problem, the Living++ project aims at developing an intuitive platform to use such devices in an integrated manner that can be controlled remotely via a television. The expected main outcome of the two-year project it will be the Living++ platform that will provide a number of services which empower elderly people to:

• Monitor vital parameters such as heart rate, etc.
• Monitor important activities such as application of medicine
• Detect falls and report them to relatives, neighbors or doctors
• Detect dangerous situations such as fire or gas leaks
• Get reminded of important dates and appointments

The Living++ consortium composed by INETSIS, University of Duisburg-Essen and IMST GmbH will work towards this goal. Grupo AMMA will also collaborate in this project to validate the Living++ platform.

The project consortium brings companies and organization from five different European countries, gathering experts from all involved technological fields. RUNNER partners are: Algosystems SA (Greece), Telecommunication
Systems Institute (Greece), Aldeabaran Robotics (France), University of Cyprus, SignalGeneriX (Cyprus), Inetsis (Spain), Universidad Politecnica of Madrid (Spain) and Mälardalen University (Sweden).

RUNNER aims to progress beyond the state of the art within the robotic field, delivering a platform with new functional capabilities and improved quality that it will increase the European industry competitiveness and will meet European citizens needs.

The project idea is based on the fact that the Euroean Union has a strong foundation world wide in telecommunication, multimedia and automotive systems, however, the contiuous increase of complex system in emerging economies may put into danger the European leadearship in these fields.

FASTCUDA aims to solve current challenges related to the design of complex integrated systems. It is foreseen that it will provide software tools, hardware architecture and design methdology to adecuate current systems. In particular, CUDA models will be put into FPGAs.

FASTCUDA Project consortium brings the following companies and organizations: Inetsis (Project coordinator; Spain), Universidad Politecnica of Madrid (Spain), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), Telecommunications Systems Institute (Greece), Ardoran OU (Estonia) and FSResalut (Germany).

During the conferences took place thematic meetings, bilateral meetings, advice on the part of experts and the promotion of alliances for the starting up of new projects of innovation IBEROEKA.

Luis Redondo, the director of ISIS Engineering, came as an expert and a speaker, taking part with a talk about “Technologies and alliances to be more competitive”, framed in the thematic qualified session “The use of Tic to optimize the Operations of the Exporting Companies”.

The presentation was focused on the launching of innovative products with competitive prices through strategic alliances and the use of technology. In order to do this is fundamental to realize an initial effort to search partners in different industrial sectors, across which we must identify problems and existing needs in the market. After a market research that assures us the commercial viability of the project, there will be necessary to analyze it from the technological point of view. In this point there will be necessary to involve both national and international partners to form a partnership capable of developing the most suitable solution.

The motivation of all the implied partners is a fundamental factor to achieve the success. This cross-border collaboration facilitates the marketing of the product or the developed solution and opens the doors for future projects and alliances.

ISIS presented its wireless prototype of climatization and intelligent illumination, based on the monitoring of the environmental conditions of the environment of application and the persons who are in it.

The wireless nodes monitor the temperature, dampness and luminosity of the place. As added value, a system of identification RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) joined to the network sensors provides to the system the capacity to control the access to certain areas and to detect persons inside it, in order to adapt the environment to their preferences, being consistent with the existing conditions.

This prototype is based on the platform developed in the project ESNA (European Sensor Network Architecture), which is one of the pillars on which one agrees ISIS’s constitution as company. ESNA has involved companies and professionals of Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Slovenia and Sweden.

The principal advantages of the system are its flexibility and scalability, the facility of its installation and low maintenance. Equally, it allows the sending and management of the alarms on its own software, its notification by mail or SMS and the definition of automatic programs of custom control for the actuators.

The System Madri+d is a network of work that groups public and private institutions of investigation and the regional business associations, which covers the essential aspects of communication between the producing sector of knowledge and the industrial sector with the aim of improving the competitiveness of the region through the transfer of knowledge.

Being of easy installation and simple managing, Coral2K® can be programmed to be customized to the needs of every environment and every client. The system is based on a wireless network WSAM distributed in the space and controlled by the software that was totally developed by ISIS Engineering.

The principal advantages of the system are its simple deployment, the low consumption of the devices, the sending of alarms when it’s necessary, automatic configuration of the network, the continuing capitation of information or the generation of reports and graphical.
